Using Alternative Carrier Gases with Accelerated ASTM D2887 Simulated Distillation Analysis

ASTM Method D2887 now allows for alternate carrier gases, so hydrogen or nitrogen can replace helium carrier gas for simulated distillation. Here, we show that with an MXT®-1HT SimDist column and Restek’s EZGC® online method translator existing methods using helium can be easily converted to either hydrogen or nitrogen carrier gas. Because retention times are preserved with proper method translation, there are minimal changes to peak identification tables which significantly simplifies method validation.

Analysis of Nicotine and Impurities in Electronic Cigarette Solutions and Vapor

Despite the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes, relatively little work has been done to characterize their vapor. In this study, we developed a quick, simple thermal desorption device for sampling vapor, as well as methods for analyzing vapor and solutions to determine nicotine content (GC-FID) and impurity profiles (GC-MS). This novel approach, which utilizes an Rtx®-VMS column, provides detectable levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) from a single 40 mL puff.

Fast, Robust LC-MS/MS Method for Quantification of Multiple Therapeutic Drug Classes Using an Ultra Biphenyl Column

Therapeutic drug monitoring requires streamlined, cost-effective testing procedures. This article details a fast, robust LC-MS/MS method for the quantification of 29 therapeutic drugs and metabolites in urine from several classes including opiates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and anticonvulsants. Good linearity, accuracy, and precision results were obtained for most analytes in a fast, 5.5-minute analysis.
